LanguageGuessr started as a side project and got picked up by the polyglot corner of YouTube. There is no marketing budget behind this — people just kept sending it to each other.

01How it works

Three moves, about ninety seconds.

01Listen

A voice, ten seconds, no context.

Somebody speaking their own language, recorded in the wild. No subtitles, no transcript, nothing on screen to help you. Just the sound of it.

02Place

Put a pin where you think they are.

The whole planet is the answer sheet. Near misses still score — a guess in the right family of languages usually lands in the right neighbourhood too.

03Learn

Find out what gave it away.

Every round closes with the language, where it is spoken, and the tell you walked past. That is the part that actually makes you better at this.

02The campaign

Take the long way round.

Nine stages across the map. Start with the basics, then work outward — each region you finish opens the next one along the route.

05Questions

Before you ask.

  • More than 150, and the list keeps growing. Widely spoken ones like Mandarin and Spanish sit alongside regional languages and a fair few endangered ones — Manx and Sorbian turn up more often than you would expect.
